How to Play Pictionary

Pictionary is a really fun game to play, with anyone of all ages.

You will need:

  • These pictionary words to draw
  • Paper (or a whiteboard)
  • A method of drawing (pen, whiteboard pen, pencil, paint, or other!)
  • A timer
  • A container for the pictionary words

Before playing, you must ensure these pictionary words for kids are all cut out, and that people are in two teams.

Each player must take a turn to be the drawer, nominate someone to go first.

The drawer must select a random word, without showing it to their team. Then the timer must be set for a minute or two (this usually depends on the age or ability of the children/people playing).

When the timer starts, they must then begin to draw something which will help their team members guess what word they selected. This drawing must be visible to the rest of their team.

They must do this without speaking and without drawing any numbers or words.

Their team members must then try and guess what they are drawing! If they manage to do this before the timer reaches zero, they score a point.

The second team then takes their turn. Every turn a new drawer should begin, so everyone gets a chance to draw!

Keep track of the points so you know which team has won in the end.

Most importantly – have fun! This is what pictionary is all about. Have a go, even if you’re not a great drawer or artist, and have a laugh with those playing.

These are the rules for the classic pictionary game. Of course, there are little ways you can change these, so here are some more ideas for pictionary:
Kids can play just as one team if there are not many of them, or if they would prefer to do so. This can make it more of a collaborative experience, focused on drawing.
Alternatively, set the time limit and make it so that kids are not restricted to just one word. Each time their teammates guess correctly what word they are drawing, they can pick another one, until their time runs out.
You can keep playing until everyone has had a go, until one of the teams reaches a certain number of points, or for a set amount of time.

What We Love About This Activity

There’s so much we love about this activity. It firstly has so many benefits for kids – as well as being a fun way to spend time with other people, it also improves their vocabulary and word recognition.

The act of physically drawing things also works on their fine motor skills and their creativity. Seeing a kid’s interpretation of a word then them drawing it creatively can be really interesting too.

This act itself, of turning the abstract concept of the written word into visual information they have to then draw, is a great skill to practice.

It also practices their teamwork as they have to work together for points. They must communicate well within the guessing part of the team too.

This activity is one which you can change in some ways, as we detailed above. You can make it a game to play during a kids party, or even make it a competition between groups of friends. A prize usually incentivises kids well!

Not only this but the word list in itself can be used in various other ways. You could use these word sheets for word bingo, you can play guessing games where people have a word and teammates must ask them only ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions in order to figure out the word, and they could even just be a great creative drawing ideas resource.

Whatever you chose to do, we hope you have fun!
