Steps to Make These Easy Chocolate Brownies
The steps to baking these chocolate brownies are really simple. It’s definitely something that you and your family can all do. Myself and my 10-year-old always have a lot of fun when we bake these together!
First, you must prepare your kitchen and equipment! Preheat the oven to 350°F (or 175°C) and prepare your 8×8 inches (or 20x20cm) baking tin. It’s best to either line it with parchment or baking paper, but you can also just grease it if you would prefer.
Second, start assembling all of your ingredients. First up is some unsalted butter, melted, and your sugar. Measure out both of these into a mixing bowl and get whisking! If your kids are young the mixing is a great way for them to be involved – just make sure to wear aprons! If they’re a bit older you can get them to help you out with measuring everything out too.
Third, when this is all mixed together then whisk in two eggs and the vanilla extract. You want to do this until the mixture is really light, fluffy and airy. Stay patient, this shouldn’t take too long for it to reach this consistency.
Fourth, swap your whisk for a spoon and ideally sift in the following ingredients; cocoa powder; flour; salt; and baking powder. You want to make sure everything is incorporated together well but don’t over-mix it. Another great way for some little hands to get involved!
Optional – here would be your chance to add in any extras if you want to. Sometimes we change it up and will add chocolate chips – some classic chocolate chips for an extra indulgent brownie, or even white chocolate can be particularly yummy. Other times we’ll add in some nuts like walnuts or almond slices. You can really experiment with this step and change it up based on your own taste buds and what you and your kids enjoy!
Fifth, all you have to do is pour the mixture into the prepared baking tin. Make sure to spread it out well so it bakes evenly, and then you’re ready for it to go into the oven!
The baking time will differ depending on how you like your brownies. If you love a gooey and chewier texture (like we do) then bake for around 20 minutes. For a cakier texture, bake for around 5 minutes more.
Do remember as well that your brownie should always be slightly underdone in the middle when you remove it from the oven. It will continue to cook a little more, and will firm up by the time it’s cooled fully. A more gooey and chewier brownie will have a slight wobble in the center, whereas a more well-done and cakier brownie will just be a little soft.
Lastly and as always, when you take it out of the oven leave it to cool for 5-10 minutes in the baking tray. After this, pop it out of the tray and cool it fully on a cooling rack. That’s if you can resist them for this long!
How to Serve
There are so many great ways to eat these brownies. Cut them into as many slices as suits you and your family (we recommend either 9 or 12), and then you can get started on the fun bit – eating them!
Warm, they’re amazing with a scoop of ice cream.
Either warm or cold they’re great topped with some whipped cream.
Have them with some berries like strawberries or raspberries. This is a more balanced way to eat them as you can still aim for your 5-a-day at the same time!
You could also drizzle a sauce on top of them – we think salted caramel works really well here.
These are a classic recipe, and one that is really good for any type of audience, whether that’s a potluck, kids party, or school bake sale. We hope you love them just as much as we do!
