In recent years, these visual word puzzles have skyrocketed in popularity, and it’s easy to see why! They’re suitable for kids as young as 5 and up, so the whole family can join in the fun. You can work on them alone for a personal challenge or make it a group activity—perfect for parties, family game nights, or even as a friendly competition in the classroom.

What Are Rebus Puzzles?

A rebus puzzle is a type of visual riddle that uses a creative mix of letters, symbols, and pictures to represent common words, phrases, or sayings. Solving one feels like cracking a secret code—you have to figure out the message hidden in the visual clues. Each rebus puzzle is a fun new mystery waiting to be solved!

To crack a rebus puzzle, pay close attention to the different elements—whether they’re words, pictures, or symbols. These clues work together to reveal the solution.

Though they’ve recently become popular again, rebus puzzles, or pictogram puzzles, have been around for thousands of years. The first known rebus appeared on a clay tablet nearly 5,000 years ago, and both the Ancient Greeks and Romans used them on coins. In 1582, French poet Etienne Tabouro published the first collection of rebus puzzles, which quickly spread to England, Germany, and Italy. Even the famous author Lewis Carroll loved rebus puzzles and included hundreds of them in his letters!

Rebus puzzles come in different styles, such as:

  • Word Rebus Puzzles: These puzzles use complete words to represent phrases. For example, if the word “just” appears inside the word “time,” the answer is “just in time.”

  • Letter Rebus Puzzles: These puzzles use letters of the alphabet, often paired with numbers or symbols. For example, GR + 8 = great.

  • Picture Rebus Puzzles: These puzzles use images to stand in for words. For instance, if there’s a picture of a broken coffee cup, the answer could be “coffee break.”

Each type offers a unique and fun challenge, making rebus puzzles a great way to stretch your brain while having fun!

Some helpful tips for solving rebus puzzles with answers:

  • Check out the position of letters and words and how they relate to each other or if they replace part of another word. If you see letters and words in unusual positions, try and think of common phrases that could described the arrangement of words, such as “below”, “above”, “on”, or “in”. For example if you saw the word “below” underneath the word “average”, the solution would be “below average”.
  • Always take notice of fonts when you’re trying to solve a rebus word puzzle! If a word is displayed in a different size, color or direction, then it’s likely to be a rebus clue.
  • Look for clues such as arrows that point out one part of a rebus puzzle or show direction. Highlighting a word, picture or symbol is often a clue to help you solve a hard rebus puzzle. If you see an emphasis on a particular word, try and think of how it could fit into a popular phrase.
  • Check for homonyms! These are pictures in a rebus puzzle that sound like more than one word (for example ‘I’ and ‘eye’). Homonyms can be useful clues, so try and consider alternative words that might fit the rebus word puzzle that you’re trying to solve.
  • Some tricky rebus puzzles play with sounds formed by letters or words. Try reading the clues out loud to see if the rebus brain teaser becomes clearer!
